01Doing it yourself: the 4 steps
Check your airline’s checked and carry-on allowance and roughly how much room and weight you have left. That tells you what can still go in the bag versus what is smarter to skip.
Found it in a store but your hands are already full? The same item is usually on Amazon, Rakuten or Yodobashi. Order it there and skip carrying the box back to the hotel yourself.
Pick a delivery date a day or two before checkout, after check-in and never before. It should land when you are ready to pack, not while you are still out sightseeing.
Pick it up at the front desk (room number or passport, no Japanese needed) and pack it straight into your checked bag. If it can only land on checkout day, a coin locker keeps it safe until your airport run.
02Where it usually goes wrong
- Overweight bag fees. Buying online does not shrink your airline allowance — a heavy last-minute haul still costs at the check-in counter. Weigh your bag before you buy so you only order what will actually fit.
- Carrying fragile things all day. Ceramics, glassware and boxed sets survive far better delivered straight to your hotel than jostled in a day bag through crowded trains for hours.
- Arrives after you check out. Order too late and the box reaches the hotel after you have gone — most desks return it to the seller, and chasing a refund from abroad is slow.
- Name mismatch. A parcel addressed to a nickname will not match your reservation, and the front desk may refuse it as unknown mail.
- Hostels and capsules. Many hostels, capsule hotels and guesthouses will not hold guest parcels, or charge a fee. Confirm before you order, or route to a locker instead.
- Japanese-only redelivery. If the first delivery attempt misses you, the slip left behind and the courier redelivery phone line and website are all in Japanese only.
- Slow marketplace sellers. Third-party Amazon and Rakuten sellers can take 4–7 days to ship — longer than the days you have left. Check the real ship estimate, not just the product page.
