Saw it in a Japanese store? Have it delivered to your hotel instead of carrying it

7 min read ◆ By the soracross team

It happens on every trip to Japan: a rice cooker in an electronics store, sneakers in your size at a department store, a box of seasonal KitKats you only see here. You still have three neighborhoods to walk through, or your size is not on the shelf. Can you skip carrying it and pick it up at your hotel instead?

Quick answer: many store items are also sold online — whether the parcel can come to your hotel depends on your hotel, and once you approve the quote and pay, soracross can ask the hotel for you before we buy. Many things in Japanese stores are also sold online. Take a photo of the product name or the price tag and send it to soracross: if the same item is sold at Amazon Japan, Rakuten or Yodobashi, we buy it there and time delivery to your stay. With front-desk pre-notice (+¥1,000) we ask your hotel in Japanese before we buy. Need it bought in the store itself? That can be arranged separately on request — we tell you whether we can, and what it costs, before you pay anything.

01In the store: what to note down

SC 01
Photograph the product name

A clear photo of the package front and the price tag is often enough for us to find it.

SC 02
Note the model number or barcode number

Electronics and appliances have a model number on the box or the shelf label. Most packaged goods also carry a 13-digit number under the barcode (the JAN code). Either one lets us find exactly the same item, not a near-match.

SC 03
Write down color, size and quantity

Many products come in several colors or sizes with almost the same name. One line saves a round of questions.

SC 04
Note where you saw it

The store name and area help if the item turns out to be sold only in that store.

If it fits in your bag and you are standing in the store, buying it right there is usually the cheapest option, and we will tell you so. soracross is worth it when the item is bulky or fragile, your day is not over, the size you want is missing, or you only decide later that you want it.

03What soracross can do

We usually buy online: the same item, from Amazon Japan, Rakuten or Yodobashi, and other online shops may be possible too. Some items are sold only in stores — a store-only color, an overseas-voltage appliance, a shop’s own goods. Buying in the store itself can be arranged separately on request: tell us in your quote request, and we tell you whether we can do it and what it costs before you pay anything. We cannot promise every store-only item.

Whether a hotel holds a guest parcel depends on the hotel — the front desk decides. With front-desk pre-notice (+¥1,000) soracross asks your hotel in Japanese before we buy. If it cannot hold the parcel, we time the order to arrive closer to your check-in at no extra charge; if it still cannot, we tell you before anything is bought; refunds follow our Terms of Service.

soracross is a personal-shopping service for travelers in Japan. We buy on your behalf — the purchase contract is between you and the retailer — and items are bought new and delivered unopened in their original box. Send a photo, a model number or a link, get one all-in quote, and pay only after you approve it. No link? Sourcing is +¥1,000 per item.

Items from different shops arrive as separate parcels, and the hotel delivery fee (¥1,000, our charge for arranging and tracking each delivery) applies per parcel. Any shipping fee a shop charges is included in the item price. No need to work it out here — we confirm the full total in your quote before you pay.

If you don't enter a product URL yourself, a +¥1,000 item sourcing fee applies per item.

08FAQ

Can you buy it at the store where I saw it?
We usually buy the same item online. Buying in the store itself can be arranged separately on request — tell us in your quote request, and we tell you whether we can and what it costs before you pay anything.
I only have a photo. Is that enough?
Usually, yes. A clear photo of the package and the price tag is a good start; the model number or the barcode number makes it exact. Sourcing an item without a link is +¥1,000 per item.
Is it cheaper to buy it in the store myself?
Often, yes — purchases you make yourself in a store with your passport can be tax-free, and there is no service fee. soracross is worth it when the item is bulky or fragile, your size is missing, or you would rather not carry it.
I saw it on my last trip. Can I order it before my next one?
Yes, if it is sold online. Send the photo or the model number with your hotel name and check-in date, and we time delivery to your stay. If you want it waiting when you arrive, add front-desk pre-notice (+¥1,000): we confirm with the hotel before we buy that it can hold it.
What if my hotel refuses the parcel?
Whether a hotel accepts parcels depends on the hotel. Add front-desk pre-notice (+¥1,000) and we check with your hotel in Japanese before we buy. If it cannot take the parcel, we time the order to arrive closer to your check-in at no extra charge; if it still cannot, we tell you before anything is bought; refunds follow our Terms of Service.
