Rakuten sells plenty you rarely see abroad — snacks and sweets by the box, Japanese skincare and cosmetics, sneakers and bags, anime goods from specialist stores. Planning a trip or already here, you find the perfect item and press checkout. Then you run into Japanese forms, a card that may not go through, and shipping rules that change from one shop to the next.
01How Rakuten is different from Amazon Japan
- Every shop is its own store. Rakuten hosts thousands of independent shops. Each one decides which cards and payment methods it accepts, what shipping costs and when it ships.
- One order per shop. Items from two shops arrive as two parcels, often on different days, each with its own shipping fee.
- Dispatch dates vary. Some shops ship the same or next day; others need several days, or order the item in only after you buy. Read the dispatch line on the product page, not just the price.
- Japanese-only checkout. Checkout runs in Japanese, with a name in katakana and a Japanese phone number. It is hard to finish on a foreign account.
02Where it can go wrong
- Overseas card declined. Since 2025, most Japanese online shops use 3-D Secure — an extra identity check by your card issuer, such as a one-time code sent to your phone. If your card is not set up for it, or the code does not reach you while you are abroad, the payment can fail at the last step, and the cart can be lost.
- Cash on delivery. Some shops still offer it. Never choose it for a hotel parcel — the front desk will not pay on your behalf.
- Parcels arriving on different days. Two shops can mean two couriers and two dates. One may land before your check-in and be refused.
- The hotel decides. Whether a parcel is held depends on the hotel. A name that does not match your reservation, or a box that arrives before check-in, is a common reason for refusal.
- Missed-delivery slip. If the courier misses you, the slip, the phone menu and the redelivery website are all in Japanese.

03How it works with soracross
One link per item, plus your hotel name, the name on your reservation and your check-in and check-out dates. You can do this before you leave home.
Item price + our service fee (10% of the item price + ¥1,000 per order, and +5% on the part over ¥10,000) + hotel delivery ¥1,000 per parcel (a shop’s own shipping, if any, is included in the item price) — everything confirmed in the quote. Nothing to pay until you approve it. After you pay, we check each shop’s dispatch date against your stay before we buy.
If you added front-desk pre-notice, we confirm with your hotel in Japanese after you pay and before we buy. We order from the Rakuten shop and pay it, so your card never has to go through the shop’s checkout.
Show your room number or passport. If a delivery is missed, we arrange redelivery for you.

Items from different shops arrive as separate parcels, and the hotel delivery fee (¥1,000, our charge for arranging and tracking each delivery) applies per parcel. Any shipping fee a shop charges is included in the item price. No need to work it out here — we confirm the full total in your quote before you pay.
If you don't enter a product URL yourself, a +¥1,000 item sourcing fee applies per item.
