You are in Japan and you have found the perfect thing online — a Switch bundle, that SK-II set, the KitKat flavors that do not exist back home. One question is holding you back: can Amazon Japan actually deliver it to your hotel?
01Doing it yourself: the 4 steps
One sentence is enough: "Can you receive a package for me during my stay?" The answer depends on the hotel — many business hotels and big chains say yes, while some boutique hotels and hostels refuse or charge a handling fee. Do not order until you have a yes.
Hotel name first, then your name exactly as on the booking. Adding 気付 (kizuke, "care of") after the hotel name helps staff route it: Hotel Gracery Shinjuku 気付 — TARO YAMADA (guest, checking in July 20).
Pick a delivery date after your check-in. Parcels that arrive before check-in are often refused and returned to the seller.
Show your room number or passport. Done — no Japanese needed at this point.
02Where it usually goes wrong
- Foreign card declined. Some Rakuten shops reject overseas-issued cards outright, and even Amazon Japan occasionally declines a foreign card at the last step. Your cart can vanish at checkout with no clear reason.
- Japanese-only shops. Rakuten and Yodobashi run checkout in Japanese only, with kana name fields and a Japanese phone number required — hard to finish on a foreign account.
- Slow marketplace sellers. Third-party Amazon sellers can take 4–7 days to ship, longer than many trips. Check the shipping estimate, not just the product page, before you order.
- Cash on delivery. Amazon Japan discontinued cash on delivery in 2024; some Rakuten shops still offer it. Never choose it for a hotel parcel — the front desk will not pay on your behalf.
- Japanese address format. Japan writes addresses large-to-small, and a field in the wrong order can misroute the box. The hotel name and 気付 line have to be exact.
- Name mismatch. A parcel addressed to a nickname will not match your reservation, and the front desk may refuse it as unknown mail.
- Arrives before check-in. Order too early and the box reaches the hotel before you do — most desks refuse it and it goes back to the seller.
- Missed-delivery slip. If the first delivery attempt misses you, the slip left behind and the redelivery phone line and website are all in Japanese only.
